What happened to Summer?

If you live in the Eastern States you'll know what I'm talking about. Most of us didn't even have the change of getting our swimsuits out of the chest of drawers, let alone put them on! Here I am sitting in front of my computer all rugged up as though it were early Winter rather than the 9th March.

But a funny thing happened. March arrived without any fanfare, and officially we're now in Autumn, but no one has told us - certainly not the weather. I guess though we should have realised it with all the flooding rains we've been getting, coupled with the strong winds.

So don't let the opportnity pass, without getting in on the act and celebrating the fact that we need to pamper ourselves with some nice clothes - as the McCain ad says, "You're worth it".

Colour, colour, colour

It's so maddening when we can't find bright, vivid, loud and bold colours for our plus-size "cold weather: clothing. Occasionally though a supplier thinks the same as we do, and brings out fantastic colour schemes.

I found this dress on the website of Navabi this morning. They call it the Psychaedelic dress. No wonder!

Flattering your figure

I just love it when fashion designers/suppliers provide us with ideas on "how to" flatter our figure. Being able to visualise clothes having seen what the experts suggest, makes it so much easier when we go to shop or even to mix-n-match what we already have in the wardrobe.

The weather world wide is a little bit crazy. The USA is experiencing very nasty tornadoes; Russia is in the midst of winter; did I hear that it was snowing in Rome? Here in Australia, there are floods - throughout Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. After a drought that lasted almost 15 years, we're now receiving the rains, coupled with strong winds and lower temperatures than normal.

And the cold weather brings us to the point in looking around our wardrobe for nice, comfy, warmer clothes. Many of us need to brighten our wardrobe up a bit, because our "favourites" have been with us for not only one year but two, three or even more. That's what comes of being plus size and finding something really nice - we wear it til it becomes almost thread-bare! But think outside the square - and see what's available overseas - you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thick/Thin Models

For decades I've admired female models. Those women who walked the catwalks of the world, wearing exquisite creations from the salons of Dior, Givenchy, Chanel, Norman Hartnell and Edith Head to name a few.

Some of these creative design houses have closed while others have changed their image by bringing in new and more modern thinking entrepreneurs.

Models of the 1940s and 1950s were considered to be not only glamourous but beautifully shaped - their waists were a natural 20 inches but they also had natural curves that complimented their small waists. And their professionalism both in their private lives and in the modelling world were so admired as to be copied by young girls from every walk of life.

Fast forward to the 1990s and 2000s and models were expected to be stick thin. The problem with this is that many began to show signs of abnormal shapes as well. Skeletal comes to mind as a description.

But lately there's something else occurring. Take Ioana Spangenberg as an example. This woman has a 20 inch waist but can she be favourably compared to the 1950s and 1960s models?

A recent photo of a model showing one of the latest Lauren garments from the Autumn collection also looks as though she is "starved". What has happened to healthy looking arms and legs, not to mention busts and butts with a bit of flesh?

But now look at 2012 - we have a new young model who is gracing the scene - Lucy Moore, the new face of Ann Summers. She has curves in all the right places.

This blog usually highlights beautiful clothes for the plus size woman - it's our small way of "inspiring women of size to look beyond their shape and size and to realise their full potential©".

You and I, and other women, also have other needs in order to feel acceptable and lovely, and self-esteem in a high need.

Over in the States at the moment there is a campaign by the name of Strong 4Life which promotes a healthy life style for kids. However .......

One of the ads that I've been sent shows a little girl who is, yes, plump. But she is not obese.

The photo shows a little girl who isn't overly happy. And I suspect it's not her size that makes her unhappy, it's the inappropriate attitude shown towards her by people all around her. I speak from experience; and I have photos taken during my childhood where I had the same facial expression. I was not only unhappy but I was desperately so. This sort of recent campaign does absolutely nothing to a vulnerable little girl who looks at the picture and then tells herself she has to diet in order to become acceptable. Most of us who are plus size have all been subjected to teasing and bullying not only during our childhood but adulthood too and we travelled the heart-wrenching diet journey that did nothing for our self-esteem or our weight. Telling a person they're fat as though it's the most horrible thing in the world will never affect a healthy feeling of self-worth or a healthy body and mind.

Attitudes and behaviour like this by others constitutes:

(a) abuse (visual, verbal and emotional),
(b) bullying and discrimination
(c) a lack of kindness and
(d) a lack of respect.

We all deserve respect, and children definitely need it. How can a little girl have a healthy self-esteem if it is inferred in advertisements such as this, that she is "unacceptable". Our kids need our encouragement and simple guidelines to follow in their lifestyle and to gain a healthy personal self-respect.

I've written about Marilyn Wann many times in my newsletters, and I've discovered that she is collecting photographs of girls (and boys) and women (and men) who all promote the "I Stand for ....." ideal. And I'd like to include one of her posters here (copyright to Marilyn Wann, of course). I love this photo - it shows someone who is cheeky, who is confident and someone who knows she is worthwhile and she intends the world to know it too!

The title of this blog is "we love beautiful clothes ......, and we love........."

What we are saying is:

"we love beautiful clothes ......

and we love beautiful people .......

no matter what age, size or shape"©

(Some of my followers may think this is a step away from my NoteBook© guidelines, but I feel strongly that this particular campaign, which I have no doubt will spread to other countries including Australia, should be confronted full-on. We also need professional to stand up on our behalf - those people who deal with us and treat us and who appreciate us for who we are. People who accept clients of all ages and all sizes and shapes. Those nutritionists, psychologists and those in the medical and health industries who deal with us and treat us and who accept that we're not all meant to be a size zero. Those professionals who in fact promote the theory that plus size people can be healthy.)

"Convertibles"

We used to use the word "convertibles" to describe our motor cars. Now to have a "convertible" means having a garment where you have almost limitless ways of wearing. Monif C is an extraodinary plus-size designer who has come up with a beautiful number - her marvellous "Marilyn" dress. Why fill your wardrobe with umpteen garments when only a couple will give you as many option? - you'll not only save space in the wardrobe but also save money. And we all can do with that!

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is almost here. For those who do, or will, receive little tokens of love, then congratulations. May you be pampered and spoiled and really loved. However, many women miss out on Valentine’s Day wishes or celebrations. I would like to reassure every woman that she is beautiful and her presence in this world deserves to be celebrated - at any time and all the time.

(a) If no one sends you a Valentine’s card or gift:

(a) buy (or even pick) yourself a small bunch of flowers and put it in a

prominent place so that when you look at it, it is a reminder you are special

(b) indulge in a special luncheon or High Tea somewhere you don’t normally go – this can be most enjoyable even if you are alone. However, if you know of someone who lives nearby who doesn’t have family , invite them to spend time with you at this luncheon or High Tea

(c) invest in a bottle of your favourite perfume, or a luscious chocolate cake

(d) pack a small suitcase and book into a nice little Bed & Breakfast in the hills; or even an overnight stay in one of the leading city hotels. Spoil yourself

(e) pack a small picnic lunch and go to a favourite park (or even a new park you’ve found, or picnic spot. Once again invite someone you know who may be lonely too

(d) write about your feelings in a small essay for publication in RoseMary’s NoteBook© (the actual newsletter that is, which is quite separate from the blog) - use a pen-name to protect your privacy, but let your feelings out. We can all share with you.

One of the things that most of us have to learn is to love ourselves, just as we are, right now. It’s not quite as easy as it sounds, but it’s very worthwhile. When we can love ourselves, then we find we appreciate ourselves for who and what we are. Building upon our own confidence in this way, will open the doors of opportunity to allow other people to see our value – even someone who will in time call us their friend or even in time their beloved. It’s not so impossible.

All it takes is a little bit of thought, and an open mind.

Yes, this countenance of mine sometimes breaks into a smile (lots of times into outright laughter).

You see the reason for my smiles this morning was the fact that I've been receiving so many emails and reminders of fantastic New Year sales, that it seems to me that businesses haven't realised we're already into February. This brings me to a simple question. If retailers are so over-stocked that they're pushing Christmas/New Year sales for more than three months now, (yes - they began back in November in the lead up to Christmas), then why aren't these garments available at a lower price all the time. Then a lot more of us would be satisfied, wouldn't we?

Of course we LOVE the sales. We wouldn't be intelligent, professional women if we didn't. But there's another side to this "sale" business.

Where are all these clothes coming from? I include the better known labels as well as the much less expensive little items that you can buy from your nearest shopping mall from little Asian store sprinkled around the place. And don't get me wrong. These little shops have some really great clothes at really great prices.

But all the clothing, whether it be the top labels or the cheaper offerings are all made overseas. You can't get away from it. Even if you disagree with the fact that "slave labour" has to be involved, and you go out of your way to buy something with a better label, and a higher price, thinking that well, it's an Australian label and therefore obviously is made here in Australia, you can be completely wrong! (Take for instance the recent Sonja Kruger line which is made off-shore).

So let's get back to my "smile" this morning. (And it wasn't because I thought of something funny).

Dressing on a shoestring

is the latest plug for buying sale garments. A shoestring? Do these people know the meaning of dressing on a shoe string? Because they then go on to provide pages of garments all priced, wait for it, around $100. Well that doesn't sound too bad, does it? It's a very expensive shoe-string as far as I'm concerned. But make your own mind up when you look at the garments.

Once again, inferior fabric and not too imaginative styles. You could save your money and pop down to K Mart and get almost the same for around a quarter of the price.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm all for patronising Australian retailers who provide good, well-made, well-thought-out styles and designs, in very good quality fabric. This is why I highlight those that I believe fall into this higher category. But there are others, with recognised names, who I don't always see eye to eye with.

Not everyone has $100 to spend on a garment. (Some of course have no budgetry constraints). But let's face it, every woman likes to look good and feel good in what she wears.

Give the local smaller retailers a fair go - those who provide good quality garments with the plus-size woman's needs as far as styles, sizes and fabric are concerned. They too, have "sales" and this is where a shrewd fashion buyer will spend her money.

Money is getting somewhat tighter - no matter what we're told by the so-called economists (they're still earning $200K a year so what do they know?) We know what's left in our purse at the end of a week. And there are other options available to those of us who are plus-size and who can't quite find something that really takes our eye. Op Shops and pre-loved boutiques are doing a thriving business, and so they should. For it's here too, that we can find absolute bargains that enhance our wardrobes and certainly enhance our feelings of self-worth. Do these clothes look or feel second-hand. From my point of view - definitely not.

Here comes the bride

It's not often that we get to highlight beautiful wedding gowns for the plus sizer. This market is however at long last receiving the focus it deserves, and even here in Australia we have a great website by the name of Plus Size Bride

Plus Size Bride Australia is a private bridal studio located in Brisbane. With a beautiful range of styles to flatter the more curvaceous figure, their wedding gowns are available in size 14 to 28plus. Custom order options are also available.

Visit their website and apply to be added to their mailing list. The number of younger (and more mature women) who want to dress as brides and to have multiple choices about styles and designs, increase every day - up until now there's been a lack of bridal wear for the plus-sizer. But not now.

Enchanting Silhouette

Colour blocking seems to be the flavour of the month - we used to call it simply "contrasting colours"!

But it's what the designer/manufacturer does with the colours that can make all the difference in the world.

OK, so many people say you can't do much to give an illusion of slimness, other than to wear all-over black all the time. Well, that antiquated idea has now been relegated to the waste paper bin, we hope.

Plus sizers can and do wear colours, and there's nothing wrong with adding a stunning colour to black to come up with a striking combination.

What's with the shoes? and With the jeans and tee shirts?

Have you noticed lately that no one seems to be wearing those high-heeled Eiffel Tower structures? In fact the majority of women seem to be favouring the Audrey Hepburn little ballet flatties! Do you think maybe too many twisted ankles have meant women have seen the error of their ways and returned to sensible shoes?

And it's not only the shoes. For so long I've been despairing of "fashion" or even every-day clothing as seen in our shopping malls and walking along the city streets. Jeans (mostly old, faded) worn with tee shirts that really don't do much for any plus-size woman, whatever the weather!

But now - girls of every age, shape and size are wearing smart dresses. Sometimes with leggings, which believe it or not can look attractive. Sometimes with ankle length pants which look especially good if the dresses are short. But women seem to be enjoying their femininity again!

And that's a good thing. It shows that they're "interested" in how they look, rather than just throwing on any old thing and expecting the world to see them as being "girls". And here's an interesting thing, the number of older women who are wearing attractive white tops over pants - black or white or inbetween - and they look great.

Can't someone come up with a reasonable explanation?

If you've been following these blogs, and in fact regularly reading our newsletter (which is now in it's 21st year) you will know that one of our pet peeves is the discrepancies in sizings for the plus sizer.

Now it's all very well for the manufacturers and retailers to tell us that it is impossible to come up with a "standard" scale for sizings, but the differences are becoming too outrageous for us to be expected to continue accepting their arguments that everybody is different so there's not much we can do about it!

Yes, we know that everyone is different! We also know that there are young women who now find similar discrepancies in the sizing charts set by their favourite label. For decades the plus sizer has been faced with this dilemma and now the young, slim, trim and taut are coming across the same frustration.

I'm not in the fashion industry. I'm not an expert on this subject. But I do wear clothes. Even though my shape has changed over the decades, my size has remained almost as a constant. And I know for an actual fact that back in the 1960s and 1970s that I could walk into a clothing shop or department store (i.e. Forges of Footscray, Rockmans - back when it started - and Myer - when it was a true department store) and buy a frock off the rack for both my mother and further into the store one for me, and I knew that the sizes on the labels were just that. Sizes that fitted - if anything needed to be done to alter the frock it would inevitably be - only the hemline. You see there were NO specialised plus size stores back then anyway - you felt as though you were more accepted back then, because every woman went into the same store and found the right frock or outfit just for her.

The only drawback back then was that there weren't enough frocks or variations on offer. And that wasn't the fault of the sizings, it was because the marketplace hadn't realised its huge potential and massive profits that could be made by segregating women's sizes within one store. Then came the specialised stores dealing with plus size clothes only.

There will be many who read this blog and who will laugh at this suggestion that there was more "acceptance" in the marketplace for the plus sizer back then by saying you're exaggerating. But I'm not exaggerating in any way, shape or form. There was a wide range of sizes that didn't go from zero (or double zero) to 50 and above as today. No, there was a much simpler way of sizing. XSSW (Extra small small woman), XSW (extra small woman); SW (small woman, W (woman fitting - believe it or not this was the most popular and common sizing because it fitted a woman who was between size 16 and small 20 as in today's sizings). Then there was XW (extra woman, XXW (extra, extra woman) and so on. OK, there were just as many sizings, but here's where it's interesting.

If you went into two different stores and bought a frock in size W, then you could be quite sure both would fit well. Whereas today you can buy one label at size 20 and in the next store you'll have to buy a size 26. Why?

So back in the 60s and 70s stores carried all these sizes on racks in the same area - there was no special section for petites, or "normal" fittings, or plus-sizers which were usually relegated to some out of the way part of the department store. You felt they really appreciated ALL their customers, whatever age, shape or size, and you didn't have to search for your section out of all the defining sections within that store.

One other interesting aspect of the contradiction and frustration with plus size clothing is this. Most women's garments during those decades were made here in Australia; they were made from mostly Australian fabrics; and they were manufactured and sewn here in Australia. They were not out-sourced or made in other countries where in many cases the sizes, weights and shapes of Australian women are not truly understood. Especially, may I repeat, the more curvaceous.

Now I understand the importance of trade and I understand the ramifactions of having a product that is less expensive to produce or make than it costs here in Australia (because of wages and other working conditions), but to let an industry (the Australian clothing industry) die for the want to being practical and forward thinking smacks of hypocrisy.

You see now we have "Australian" suppliers providing clothes that are inferior in quality and design and sizes. It doesn't matter if a garment costs $50 or $150, do you really get quality for your money? Will that garment last and give you the service that you've paid for?

Ignoring the obvious!

I've had my wrist slapped! You've been concentrating too much on the overseas clothing and ignoring the Australian selections! No less than five of my readers wrote to me in this vein, so I've been looking around to find something to present to you. (There are, I know, a number of stores/boutiques/retailers, that I consistently ignore and while they DO have plus size clothing, I believe we deserve better styles, better designs and better fabric from those particular avenues).

What I have noticed though is that the "Peasant" look has returned, with a little touch of sophistication. Scarves are an integral part of any woman's wardrobe and of course the value of accessories can't be faulted.

But I did visit My Size again this morning and they've got some interesting garments. I'm highlighting a couple which give opportunity of mixing and matching and coming up with completely different outfits. And of course, if you're like me, you always like black as a basic colour to build a new season's wardrobe upon. (With that said however, they've got some great colour garments too!)

Of course let's face it, I don't see much happening in my own local shops or malls, but the internet has opened a whole new world for us. It's just sometimes there's so much to look for, that we miss some of the greatest finds.

Versatility!

There's no doubt that with a little bit of thought and imagination, you can expand your wardrobe with just a few items.

Vests can lift an ordinary outfit, and compliment pants whether slim tights or loose cool ankle length.

Good quality versus "ordinary"

This is one of my pet peeves. Many clothing suppliers, and it's across the board from small and petite to plus-size, take the attitude that they're doing us all a favour by presenting clothing that "looks" good in photographs but in reality is poor quality. And that poor quality is both in the fabric used as well as the sewing of the garment.

Take for instance this top. It's at presently on "sale" from one of our suppliers here; but it's original price was $130. Now for $130, even in this day and age, I look for "quality" for my dollar. And while I haven't seen the actual fabric that is used on this garment, I can see at a glance that the workmanship as far as sewing of the garment is concerned, is not quite as good as it should be. (Unless of course this is seen to be the current trend and everyone is expected to accept that.)

What I'm talking about mainly is the hemline. Now to some people hemlines don't matter, but to me and thousands of other women, they most certainly do. Because a badly sewn hem can "undo" a garment without even trying. It makes a garment look untidy and it makes it look as though it's one of those $5-10 dollar garments you can buy from the small Asian stores. And if this garment was only $5-10 then would I still complain? I probably would you know, because having done a lot of sewing myself in days gone by, I was instilled with the notion that even if you purchased a "remnant" to make a garment, then that fabric deserved to be treated well. And if it was sewn well, then it would always look tidy and as a result would last longer than when hemming threads unravel and the garment sags even more.

Because to my eyes, this garment looks as though it's unravelling already. Its hemline certainly is sagging. If a garment doesn't have a straight hemline (other than say a handkerchief hemline or mullet) then it never looks "quality".

Would I buy this garment, even if it is "on sale" at a special price, (and mind you it's still around the $40 mark)? Would you?

Does it strike you as somewhat amusing that I'm thinking trans-seasonal? Perhaps it's not really.

You see here in Australia we are in the season of summer, and while we've had some torrid days (over 40 degrees celsius) and have been promised some more, other days we've been lucky to get up to around 20 degrees! This means that even though we may put on a flimsy feminine frock at the beginning of the day, we still need to add a bolero of cardigan or even jacket by the end of the day.

So it's a matter of planning and dressing for a variety of seasons all in one day. Which isn't so unusual, but it certainly becomes practical.

Well what a way to start. The weather here has been so strange lately - last week I had to rummage around looking for a thick winter woollie, in order to keep warm. Today they tell us it could get to around 40 degrees. Honestly!

There's a lot going on in the fashion world for the plus-size at the moment. Brought about by the persistence and tenacity of beautiful people who refused to sit down and stay quiet about the needs of the more curvaceous woman in having gorgeous clothes. For too long we were told to be grateful for what the industry presented to us - their attitude was to make money but certainly not satisfy our longing to look beautiful, and to feel beautiful. But things have changed - and how they've changed!

Already the 31st December. To some of us the year seems to have dragged; to others it's jut flown. It's been a hectic year for some; a boring year to others (I always think that if a person is constantly bored, then it's no fault of anyone or anything but that particular person!). But all in all, an interesting year.

Have you made your list of New Year Resolutions as yet?

I decided to make One New Year's Resolution this year.

And that is - to make NO resolutions.

They never work anyway.

No - what I'm planning to do is to set myself some goals - some that are simple and easily attainable; some that are moderate which will take a little more effort but satisfy me; and some more difficult ones - which I always love setting because you know, over the years, quite a number of these HAVE been achieved.

There are plans for fireworks everywhere to celebrate the coming in of the New Year - sounds a good idea. Let's choose our own fireworks to start the New Year off - it's up to us.

I'd like to take this opportunity of saying a sincere "thank you" for everyone who follows this blog - it's a fascinating journey and you certainly make it really worthwhile.

Do you have clothing in your wardrobe that you've grown out of? Or perhaps find some of them to be too big?

There's no doubt our bodies change shape over the years, and while we may not actually "lose" weight, often we will notice that our clothes don't quite fit the way they used to, or should do. Following pregnancy and the birth of a baby quite a few clothes need to be altered too, and this can help the budget especially when the garments are favourites.

While it's expensive to have your own personal dressmaker, a lot of women have taken up the challenge and now offer "alteration services". These range from sewing hems on jeans, pants, skirts as well as putting new elastic around the waistlines. However, a lot of these people actually do dressmaking and have found a valuable market in providing their services to the every-day woman who wants to upgrade her wardrobe without having to buy new clothes.

As a very proficient, qualified dressmaker said recently, "knowing someone's body and shape is the key to doing good alterations work". A good alteration expert can tell if the shoulder is dropped and the hip is high and remake garments taking into account all the important aspects of a good fitting garment.

Suggestions may range from changing a hemline by not merely following the fashion, but looking at the vertical line of their height and to judge according to the hemline, and that good tailoring makes it more fashionable. Adding darts can make all the difference from a dowdy looking garment to a smart, stylish fitted garment - even if you are plus size!

Above all, tailoring to YOUR body can better the look of the garment, making it appear superior in quality and cut.

Most of us have already chosen the outfit which we plan to wear for Christmas Day - whether going to church, meeting up with family and friends or just taking things easy by ourselves. And a lot of people do prefer spending Christmas Day alone, choosing to get-together with others and attending parties in the week leading up to Christmas allowing "their" day to be theirs entirely!

The contradiction of sizings!

So often we see lovely "plus-size" garments, only to find out that the sizings go to around Australian 16-18.

To many of us, 16-18 definitely aren't "plus-size" sizes.

And let's face it, sizings differ so much that they make our head spin! Take for instance, a lovely white top I bought this morning - the label says XXL which equates (by this particular supplier) to around size 22 Aus. In the very same store, there were some beautiful knitted tops in a light silk like thread with sparingly placed sequin embellishments - very nice, very "want-able", and in sizes up to XXL. But here's the problem, these XXL silk-like knitted tops would not fit my grand-daughter who is a size 12.

This really makes me cross. Because it's girls like my grand-daughter who see garments that they'd like to buy for themselves and the label says XXL. That starts them on the treadmill of convincing themselves that they're overweight - they're "fat". And that leads to inappropriate dieting. As we all know this can lead to even more health risks.

Because in amongst it all, they're NOT "fat" - they're not plus-size at all. It's the labels that are out of sync with each other, not women's shapes and sizes.

When garments are made off-shore, and unfortunately most of them are*, there's no way that we can persuade the manufacturers/retailers to get a more realistic slant on sizes. But we'll keep trying. (* We regularly highlight the Australian suppliers who provide garments in generous sizings and with appropriate labels because we feel they need to be encouraged and supported).

In the meantime, Making It Big (USA) have come up with some really lovely garments. Mind you, they're in the midst of the colder seasons but sometimes it pays to consider buying (especially when they are on sale at special prices) even though we're still awaiting summer! Their sizes range from 1X through to 8X.

The colours of Christmas!

We usually equate bright red, bright green, silver and white with being the colours of Christmas. And they always work!

Even here in Australia, where we're usually sweltering even this early in Summer. But I'll let you into a little secret. We're still having winter conditions, and needing to dress appropriately to much colder weather than we're used to. Of course with that said, it surely won't be too long before the really hot days arrive.

So it's not unreasonable for us to consider the typical colours of Christmas as being right for us here as well as our sisters in the States and Europe and Asia.

Yesterday's blog showed a couple of beautiful "curvaceous" models. I thought you'd like to see another. For the more often we see models with natural flesh and curves, the less we'll be told and reminded that anything other than skeletal frames are not really acceptable. I think the argument that a model must be a size zero no longer holds any substance. And substance is what it's about, really.

I maintain that women's magazines, world wide, are supposedly written with "women as their focus". That means, to my way of thinking, that these magazines should include women of all ages, including growing older years, women of different shapes and sizes, all as a matter of course. Not just in occasional advertisements, and certainly not in occasional segments or supplements being shown as women who are treated as an after-thought. Why is it that these magazines highlight "everything" for and about women who are young and extremely thin (not necessarily naturally thin) and yet ignore the women who are like you and me. Rounder women; taller women; bigger women; older women; women with experience in many life issues. We're all customers, we're real flesh and blood. We're the woman next door, women in our family and women you see down the street, every day, in every town and city in the world. Yet we're looked upon and spoken about as though we're either invisible or not deserving of respect. We're expected to fit into "their" ideals, when quite honestly "THEY" haven't a clue about what the word ideal means. They want us to do as they say, and be like they say we should be like, and look as they say we should look like. Well, it doesn't work that way.

Life is about diversity, and it's about time that the magazines of this world, including their editors and features and beauty editors, took note.

The modelling game

I've been known to question the description of models who at the very most would be size 12, as being "plus-size". Someone said to me the other day that I was being very "picky".

It's not that. It's just that being a plus sizer, I don't think it fair that someone who is a size 12 or 14 (with a beautiful figure to go with it) is seen and described as being "plus-size". I don't think it's fair that I should therefore be "seen" to be excessively plus-size based on a comparison between that size 12 model and me. I'm not talking about youth or looks, or lithe, svelte figures, I'm talking sizes here.

I've questioned clothing suppliers who also make/design/sell plus size clothing yet persistently model those garments on at the very most a size 16 girl. Of course the size 16 and 18 and 20 girls want to see how they would look in garments provided by these suppliers, and they should. But let's look at the whole picture. If you supply garments from size 14 to size 24 for example, then surely on your website as well as your catalogues you would show models wearing your garments in the

whole size range.

Yes? But in the main you don't.

One supplier here in Australia who has always included a range of model sizes is Sybill's of Queensland. They used to be Carousel, and their garments are fantastic. Then there is Big Time Clothing who also use models who equate with the clothing they sell. Big in Black as well - and keep tuned to BIB because I understand they'll be updating their website within the next couple of weeks.

But let me get back to plus-size models, or as I prefer to call them, curvaceous models. Two American girls that I believe represent the young curvaceous size model are Ashley Graham and Marquita Pring.

See if you don't agree - these women are beautiful in their own right. Plus size? Yes. And they're proud of their figures and their ability to shine in the spotlight to highlight plus size clothing.

We should see more models of this calibre and size.

Some of the pre-Christmas specials on sale in America

You will have noticed, I am sure, that I promote a lot of American suppliers and their websites. While there are a number of suppliers here in Australia who provide really lovely clothing for the plus sizers, there are far more now in America who for some reason their designs appear to be more flattering for the curvy figure.

So this post, once again, presents Igigi. They've presently got a sale going, and I'd encourage my Australian readers also to have a look at Igigi's website, and to take advantage of the pre-Christmas sales. (Some of the prices are well below what are on sale here at K Mart and many of the chain retailers!)

One of my friends here recently purchased a couple of garments from Igigi, and honestly the designs and fabrics were fantastic. Much of what is available here in Australia comes a second best in both those areas. When will Swing Jackets return?

There's an old saying that what goes round comes round. And with fashion, that's very true in many respects. Full circle skirts; flared jeans; mini skirts; ponchos; muu muus to mention a few.

But I've been waiting for a long long time for the return of Swing Jackets. I haven't been able to find any since they first became popular back in the 1950s.

They were so attractive, and plus size girls always liked the idea that swing jackets gave the illusion of slimness. I guess it was because we wore slim skirts or slacks - yes even plus sizers - which the swing jacket complimented.

In my wardrobe are a number of items that are "collectibles" - which I still wear on special occasions. One of those garments is a swing jacket and because it has magyar sleeves, I proudly show off the label and the size mentioned on that label. Size 14. Australian size 14. And you can tell from my profile picture that I'm anything but size 14!

Here's an example of what I mean by Swing Jackets to those who may not have come across them before. They were usually lined with a contrast colour which gave us many options. There's a lot to be said about keeping the economy "going". Over the past 12 months particularly I've been hearing from women (of all ages and all sizes) saying that they're looking to the local Australian market for clothing rather than ALWAYS looking overseas. Mind you, I'm one of the first to agree that much of the American and UK clothing is, if anything, quite spectacular, and you will see this from many of my posts.

But I'm also one of those people who say - at least look at what is available locally, because quite honestly you'll ocasionally find something really out of the box.

What it comes down to, is this. Keep an open mind.

So now we come to swimwear. While a lot of curvy women now feel comfortable in wearing two piece swimsuits, there is still the preference to the one piece by many plus sizers - particularly in the higher sizes. And more women are becoming "comfortable" in being seen in swimwear - confidence is building among the plus sizers of the world, and we advocate that confidence is something that we should encourage within ourselves, and with other women.

A new collection at Myer

The soon to be launched fashion range at Myer, the Sonia Kruger Collection has been designed (with collaboration from Design Works - I may be corrected on this point), by 46 year old Sonia Kruger, and has a special element within the shape of all her dresses.

It's amazing that this hasn't been thought of before, but Sonia Kruger has incorporated a bodyshape garment within all her dresses - an all in one I suppose you'd say.

Unfortunately for the plus size women, the range only goes up to size 16. But who knows? It makes sense to me to have a body-shape incorporated into any dress - including those for the plus sizer.

Myer have apparently already shown interest in a second collection to be released in 2012. While most of the garments are supposed to be "about" $200, it's quite clear that this is the bottom line of the price range, as some are $269 and $299.

* Sonia Kruger has made the headlines again during the past week or so by leaving Dancing with the Stars, and becoming host of Big Brother which will be returning to our television screens next year. She has also switched channels from 7 to 9, and will be hosting a new show, replacing Kerrie Anne Kennelley who has been sidelined in favour of Kruger (who appears to be the current flavour of the month).

SOMETHING SPECIAL TO WEAR

Things are building up towards Christmas. Lots of parties, family and friend get-togethers. Breakups from many clubs and groups. Graduation and presentation evenings; even engagement and wedding celebrations.

CONFUSION WHEN IT COMES TO SIZES

Countless plus-size women, those women who are size 16 plus, up to and beyond size 30, are confused when it comes to comparing Australian sizes with those from other countries. Don't get me wrong we get confused with the sizings that are offered here in Australia, as one designer will be as much as two or three inches different to another, in the same item of clothing. Actually, even the designers don't follow their OWN sizings. You'll sometimes find three items of clothing from one label that are all different when it comes to sizings and how they fit.

But let's get back to comparisons. Now that many of the European suppliers are delivering to Australia, it's easy to get caught up with the expectation that something will fit only to find that the sizings from Europe are so much different to ours. (Recently I saw and was told that English sizes are the same as ours - I'll like to get that confirmed, because ......)

I do like it when catalogues show the actual measurements of the garments as well as their sizings. This gives you a much better idea, and you can measure yourself just to see whether the garment in question will fit.

We've all heard of waxing

Waxing is a part of life. For most women anyway. And as the years pass by, many find that facial hair particularly becomes a problem. A BIG problem. Who wants whiskers, for goodness sake?

And for women with sensitive skin waxing causes more bother than it's worth. Whether you want to believe it or not, waxing does take off the top layer of skin. Why put your skin through all this pain and discomfort and red face when there are other alternatives?

Let me come to the subject of "threading". Many friends and counterparts look at me in confusion and dare I say it complete weirdness when I mention that I have an appointment to see my "threading lady".

But she is worth her weight in gold. Honestly. So professional that I don't even realise I'm having the hair removed one by one or sometimes a few at a time. Lovely moisturiser and rose water applied following the procedure making my skin feel tingly and pampered. If you don't know about threading, then here's a bit of a write up. I think it's the perfect way of handling a bristly situation!

LAUGH AT OURSELVES, OCCASIONALLY

There have been, and probably will be, lots of books written about women who feel insecure about themselves. Their looks, their inadaquacies, their lack of sophistication (truly though we use that word indiscriminately - just look it up in the dictionary/thesaurus to see what I mean); their failure at their work and their big-time failure at finding someome who loves them - just as they are! NOT when they lose 40 kg; not when they have botox treatments; not when they have liposuction; not when they diet themselves to death. Just as they are - right now in real time.

So I bought this little book at a White Elephant sale for 5 cents. I have to admit that I bought it only because the author's name seemed familiar - and then I realised that she often is part of the "Grumpy Old Women" group in the BBC series - Arabella Weir. She has an infectious sense of humour. I decided 5 cents was OK, because after reading it I could just give it in to an Op Shop for on-selling. * Let me say here and now, this book remains on my book shelves - it's worth it's weight in gold - literally! And it's one of those books that I consistently go back to - to have a laugh, and to learn how to like myself all over again.

And boy does Arabella Weir have it spot-on when it comes to describing how we often feel about ourselves - as full-blown losers! Losers in all respects, except weight (but then we're risen about that - we've come to the wonderful conclusion that we're OK as we are - what a liberating feeling.)

This book, "Does My Bum Look Big in This?" is hilarious. It's tear jerking hilarious because it's so US! It's so heart-breakingly glaringly truthful and it's a book that I felt personally, didn't focus on my insecurity - it actually lifted my feelings of self worth. Because I see life as it is - there are so many misconceptions - even by ourselves about ourselves. The words she uses come from my heart and your heart and this woman has touched the very spirit of our femininity (albeit plus size femininity).

Read this passage and see if you agree. Don't be surprised if I quote a few passages from this book over time because I know they'll do me a lot of good, and I hope they will you too. So here goes:

"Went to the sales, gave up after two shops. Everywhere I went I knew the assistants were thinking, "Oh, please, why are you bothering to spend your money on clothes; tents from Millets would be more suitable".

"Six Ryvitas, half a teaspoon of no-fat, no-flavour cottage cheese and two wrinkled tangerines since Saturday and several gallons of that Chinese macrobiotic tea. It tastes a lot like lavatory cleaner with old coins soaked in it - must be really good for you. Feel great.

Same day, 2.a.m. I'm now lying in bed, can't face my usual midde-of-the-night weigh in, I just know I've put on at least half a pound. The bus conductor's going to notice and give me a pitying look, sort of saying, Well, hello, Miss Piggy, how do you expect to get a seat on the bus with that fat arse?" It's one of those pay-as-you-enter buses but all the same he's definitely going to be thinking that as he looks at me in his rear-view mirror.

Decided to weigh myself after all - and thanks a lot - weighed another pound. Went back to bed. No point going to work if everyone is going to laugh at me."

Now tell me truly, have you ever felt like that? I know I have and there is a way out of this trap of body hatred. It's well worth pursuing and it all starts with you and me. Healthy self-talk is a great first step.

I'm a little intrigued though at the hair colour change. Wasn't she a buxom blonde? Why the dark hair - perhaps she is trying to hide those few little grey hairs that sneak up on us all?

What's with Spring?

Can't believe it. Today it was around 28 degrees with sun shining nicely and then the sun went down and the temperature fell to around 12, and it's cold! That means instead of being able to float around in glamourous chiffony (OK, cotton or linen) summery garments until bed time, it's a matter of rummaging around trying to find a nice cardigan to keep out the chill.

So it's a matter it seems of seeking out lovely clothing from the other side of the world to keep us happy while we complain about the weather here in Oz. (I've read though that many of our American sisters particularly are complaining about the fact that Fall seems to have passed them by and they're already well into Winter as well!)

PS This is yet another case of colours that you think may not suit you. I usually can't wear yellow or orange but I found that by ensuring the basic colour that DOES suit me near the face, even a scarf, (i.e. either white of black) that I can wear the colours I never thought of wearing in years gone by. It's all a matter of a change in mind-set. Experiment - always experiment.

As a plus-sizer (well I prefer calling myself curvaceous), I just love cowl neck sweaters. People tell me I shouldn't. Why? Because I have a bust, I suppose. What I think more likely is that they're jealous that I can wear cowlnecks and that I always feel good wearing them.

Anything that has a batwing or magyar sleeves will always compliment a shapely woman. (Quite often too it's possible to go for a smaller size because the batwing effect gives so much more room about the bust and midriff).

Dinner Table Etiquette - the 10 Don'ts!

NEVER start eating before a signal from the host to do so.
Forks should not be turned over unless being used for eating peas, sweetcorn kernels, rice or other similar foods. In which case, it should be transferred to the right hand. However, at acasual buffet, or barbecue it is quite acceptable to eat with just a fork.
It is not generally regarded as good dinner table etiquette to use one's bread for dipping into soups or mopping up sauces.
Loud eating noises such as slurping and burping are very impolite. The number one sin of dinner table etiquette!
Talking with one's mouth full. is not only unpleasant to watch, but could also lead to choking! Definitely not a good idea!
Don't stretch across the table crossing other guests to reach food, wine or condiments. Instead ask a guest sitting close to pass the item to you.
Good dinner table etiquette sometimes involves a degree of diplomacy when it comes to the host's choice of food and wine! Even if you feel that you can do better, don't ever offer your criticism. If you feel unable to pay any compliments, at least remain silent on the subject.
Picking teeth (unless toothpicks are provided) or licking fingers are very unattractive! The only exception to the latter is when eating meat or poultry on the bone (such as chicken legs or ribs). In which case, a finger bowl should be provided.
Drinking too much wine can be very embarrassing! Where a different wine is served with each course, it is quite acceptable to not finish each glass.
Don't forget to make polite conversation with those guests around you. Dinner parties are not just about the food, they are intended to be a sociable occasion!

Approaching the "Party" Season

Have you ever been invited to a special event or function and you're never quite sure how you should behave, or more importantly what the etiquette demands for that particular occasion? Have you ever stayed at home because you felt you couldn't cope with the anxiety of not wanting to make a fool of yourself? Have you ever gone to the event and felt embarrassed all night because you made a couple of faux pas? Do you relive those embarrassing moments?

I wish that I had known some of these "do's" during my younger years. They would have solved a lot of negative self-talk when I did a few things wrong.

So, here's a great little list of the "10 Do's as they apply to Dinner Table Etiquette". Read them, learn them, and then go out and enjoy yourself knowing that you have the knowledge to enjoy your evening (or function) without any worries of doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Good etiquette is an asset - it's not old-fashioned or out of date. These pointers are handy to know, because you may receive an invitation out of the blue and it's always good to be well prepared.

Dinner Table Etiquette - the 10 Do's!

Once seated, unfold your napkin and use it for occasionally wiping your lips or fingers. At the end of dinner, leave the napkin tidily on the place setting.
It is good dinner table etiquette to serve the lady sitting to the right of the host first, then the other ladies in a clockwise direction, and lastly the gentlemen.
Hold the knife and fork with the handles in the palm of the hand, forefinger on top, and thumb underneath.
Whilst eating, you may if you wish rest the knife and fork on either side of the plate between mouthfuls. When you have finished eating, place them side by side in the centre of the plate.
If the food presented to you is not to your liking, it is polite to at least make some attempt to eat a small amount of it. Or at the very least, cut it up a little, and move it around the plate!
It is quite acceptable to leave some food to one side of your plate if you feel as though you have eaten enough. On the other hand, don't attempt to leave your plate so clean that it looks as though you haven't eaten in days!
Desserts may be eaten with both a spoon and fork, or alternatively a fork alone if it is a cake or pastry style sweet.
Should a lady wish to be excused for the bathroom, it is polite for the gentlemen to stand up as she leaves the table, sit down again, and then stand once more when she returns.
Always make a point of thanking the host and hostess for their hospitality before leaving.
It is good dinner table etiquette to send a personal thank you note to the host and hostess shortly afterwards.

At a recent seminar the subject was raised, by some of the young men attending, as to what is considered to be the "suitable dress code" for today's workplace. At first this may seem a little strange, given that young people seem intent on breaking down all previous and pre-existing codes of dress, whether inside the workplace or in their private lives.

Quite a discussion followed, and it was interesting to hear that many of the male attendees thought that some sort of reasonable dress code should be promoted within their ranks, rather than anyone wearing what they like, in whatever condition that clothing may be. It seems that high standards are still sought by the young. (The idea of dressing any way they liked on Fridays seems to have run its course?)

That gave me some thought, and when I visited the post office on the way home, I caught a glimpse of the "latest" gear for the up and coming male "professional" in the window of a boutique store nearby. Having my camera gave me the opportunity to take a shot.

I don't think this is quite a dress code that the young attendees to the seminar were thinking about, but it does pose a couple of questions. Firstly is this suitable for a young professional person in his workplace, and secondly are the jeans in particular worth $200? And yes, those are deliberate tears in the knees, and the fabric looks as though it's been recycled many times over with the obvious tendency to becoming threadbare around the pockets. This is NOT a charity shop with second hand goods, but a boutique store well known for it's trendy gear and accepted for being forward-thinking in it's professional wear.

On the traditional ladies day, 78 YEAR OLD JOAN COLLINS had a few words of wisdom for the young girls on how to look glamorous on a day at the races.

"I think it takes effort and a little bit of mystery and certainly it helps if you wear makeup I think," Collins said.

"I don't think you can be glamorous without wearing makeup."

More Melbourne Cup 2011

Well, the girls certainly came up trumps when it came to colour yesterday. Even the fashion commentators expressed a little concern that everyone would be dressed in black and white, but their fears were unfounded. Colour, colour everywhere. Blocks of colour, tonings of colour, and florals and geometrics were the order of the day.

Melbourne Cup 2011

While the photos on the Melbourne Cup 2011 Pages (see link under Pages) may appear a little grainy, (due to having been taken by a digital camera aimed at the television!) they will give some idea of the spectacle that is the Melbourne Cup. I do wonder though, why in temperatures of 14-18 degrees that women will wear sleeveless dresses. While there were pre-Cup commentaries along the lines that "fascinators" are out, this obviously didn't deter most women wearing them. I guess there's a difference between a "fascinator" and a hat, but the majority that I saw on the telecast this afternoon showed fascinators in all sizes and it was difficult to find a "real" hat.

But that doesn't in any way suggest that all the ladies at the Cup didn't enjoy themselves immensely - maybe the weather was overcast, but there was, apparently a lot of champagne to warm the hearts of most racegoers.

While I try never to be negative, I can't understand why "top" models who are dressed by the most fashionable designers in the country (dress, hat, shoes and handbag) they spoil the entire look by untidy hair. This photograph was taken very early in the morning of the Cup, not after hours of being entertained and interviewed, so I wonder why the lank hair! This is Jennifer Hawkins, one of the highest paid models in Australia - does she really look the part?

Pre-loved versus Second Hand (it's all in the wording)!

There's been a flurry of activity here with the Buy Nothing New campaign for October. In fact the concept has been so popular that many participants have made a conscious decision to follow the principles all year round. What is so good about this is that, as far as the pre-loved garment market is concerned, it can not only be ongoing but increase in ways of utilising the Buy Nothing New principle.

"Second-hand" for some reason of another has taken on a negative thought in many people's minds. It's as though being "second-hand", it should only be relegated to the waste bin. I guess it all comes down to the way you think about things.

For instance - you may go into a leading boutique and buy a highly priced garment which in your thinking is "new". Has it ever occurred to you that that particular garment may have been bought by someone else, taken home, tried on, and then returned to the boutique as being "unsuitable"? It does happen you know.

As a comparison you enter one of the major Charity Stores, such as St Vinnys, Brotherhood of St Laurence or one of my favourite haunts, the Salvation Army Thrift shops or Family Stores, and you are surrounded by, in many cases, absolutely new garments that have never been worn. They still retain their swing tickets, and they have been carefully and lovingly checked and rechecked as being squeaky clean without any blemishes, by professional people within these organisations before being distributed to the store outlets.

Even obvious second-hand clothes have been dry-cleaned, buttons sewn on, hems and sewing checked, and presented in such a way that you don't "see" the second-handedness of the garment, but that it is something that appeals to you, that fits you, and more often than not, is totally affordable. And in many cases, these garments are priced so low that they shouldn't be missed!

I read in a national newspaper that three mature aged ladies had bought themselves lovely pre-loved wedding gowns which they have had altered, and which they intend to wear to the Melbourne Cup! "We said to each other, let's dress up! And none of us had ever been dressed as brides when we married, so this was a great opportunity!"

Women who were born during and following the Second World War, and indeed their children, grew up with what used to be termed, "hand-me-downs". There was never a thought that they were not appreciated and in fact many times a garment such as this became a firm favourite. These garments would never have been afforded, but with the advent of passing one garment to another person, meant that each was given the opportunity of having nice clothes to wear. And for many women, that continued throughout their married lives, when money was tight - and let's face it, money is tight in many families all the time, not just occasionally.

So there are many reasons why the Buy Nothing New campaign has been a success - of course to many of us it's been a way of life for a long time.

What's this fascination with fascinators?

Have you noticed that "fascinators" are still fascinating women? What is it about fascinators that appeal to women of all ages? (And women don't seem to worry about the cost - some of them are around the $200-300 mark!) And fascinators that sit hanging down over one ear compel me to question (and hold my breath) that they'll fall off if the breeze lifts!

Hats are beautiful creations that will set off an outfit to such an extent that people will look and say, "oooh", and "aaah". A lot of fascinators look the same or at the least similar to each other. But look at it the other way - there are craft shops that sell all the parts needed to make a personal fascinator, and there's something really pleasing about making something yourself. A few feathers, some sequins, a flower or butterfly, a little veiling, and a glue gun, and you can create all sorts of wonderful fascinators.

So it looks as though fascinators are with us for while, and that's good, because "dressing up" needs to be for the whole person, not just the body, the feet and the hands. A lovely dress, matching shoes and handbag will always be complimented by a lovely hat, be it a large flowery one or a feathery whimsical fascinator!

A long way from anywhere!

Yes, Australia is a long way from anywhere! Even in today's age where air travel is fast. So we don't get too many "celebrities" visiting. I mean real celebrities, not current "singing sensations" or similar. We get the occasional "Hollywood actor/actress" but that doesn't mean too much to the majority of people.

So the visit by Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, while expected, who attended the opening of CHOGM in Perth a couple of days ago, took many of the commentators by surprise. Not that they weren't expecting them, rather that the hundreds of thousands of people who lined the streets and airports to see their arrival and departure, argued the point that a lot of people had been saying, "there's not much interest in the Royal Family these days!"

Well! The Monarchy, to those hundreds of thousands, and to millions of us who were watching television and reading newspapers and magazines, certainly is relevant today.

The underlying tone of journalists continues the thread set more than 50 years ago when she was crowned, that the Queen is warm and gracious; she is knowledgeable; she is intensely interested in where she goes and who she speaks to and with; she is regal; she is, as one reporter wrote, able to be serious one moment and then she smiles and the recipient is made to feel as though she personally cares.

The Queen to many of us, represents stability (even taking into account all the shenanigans that some of the Royal Family get up to); and ethics. She carries out her tasks with pride and elegance and at 85 astounds with her energy and exurberance.

We have watched her over the years grow into the role of Queen, at first tentatively but with compassion and a distinct awareness of responsibility (her first speech as Queen showed that!), and then through the years to the current day. Her popularity is, it seems, almost as strong today as it was back in 1953.

This blog is written for women, about women, and we couldn't let the opportunity go by without including this post on the Queen, as she departs Australia in October 2011.

While the weather is somewhat overcast, the infectious excitement that this season brings is easily seen in how the girls dress up. I often wonder why women don't dress up all the year round, rather than just going all out just for the racing season.

This morning though I've been a little surprised to see the majority of women dressing in black and white. Now I don't know whether this was a prerequisite of being seen and interviewed, but I do hope that bright colours come into the picture as the season progresses. On that subject though you'll see one lass wearing bright green with a pink hat - she obviously likes the idea of "block colours" that is a current trend. Of course we used to describe this trend as merely "wearing contrasting colours", but there you go even the descriptions undergo changes themselves!

With that said however, and of course this blog is for women of ALL ages, ALL sizes and ALL shapes, let's have a quick look at a couple of outfits seen this morning.

Comfort food!

Well, that was an interesting post on comfort food we had recently. I heard from a friend through Google, and a variety of emails from ladies from around Australia as well as from Europe.

It's interesting to hear what any one person thinks of as "comfort food". Here are some of the suggestions, and I have to say, I was in total agreement when I saw that Macaroni and Cheese was high on the list. Then there's Spaghetti Bolognaise; Lamb Shanks and vegetables; Home made Meatloaf; Chicken Snitzel; Egg and Bacon Pie: Irish Stew and Dumplings: Bread and Butter Pudding; Chocolate Self Saucing Pudding; Crepes and Big Pancakes. And of course as in our earlier post, Sausages and Mash1

It's also encouraging to hear that so many are now preparing meals at home rather than going out for dinner more than a couple of times a week. It could be stretching the budget or it could be that more and more women are remembering what it was like when they were younger and they came home from achool and or work, to find warm nourishing meals placed on the table. And those meals were prepared with love by their Mums and Grandmas.

There's a feeling of Spring!

What strange weather we're having here in the Eastern States of Australia. It's supposed to be Spring - well officially the 1st September is supposed to be the first day, but this year things seem to have gone a bit haywire. While we've had a couple of beautiful days with bright skies, sun shining and a general feeling of wellness that is associated with better weather, the majority of days have skirted around the 12 to 15 degree mark (top temperature!), with one day in between of 30!

So much for being able to pack away the winter clothes and to bring out the spring/summery garments.

Yet there is some great plus-size fashion coming out at the moment, and in many cases, by Australian designers and suppliers.

Maggie T (http://www.maggiet.com.au) is a by-word when it comes to the understanding of what a more curvaceous woman needs when it comes to fashion. She knows, because as she tells it, "I am one (plus-size, that is)!"

So here are a couple of the latest tops/jackets. You'll notice that they sit below hip length, which is the length we all need, especially when we have those curvy "saddles". A hip length jacket will always bring compliments, and the front view as well as profile will always encourage you to stay with sensible lengths, rather than above the waist or sitting on the hip!

Comfort food!

There's "comfort food" and then there's "comfort food". And all of us, from the Prime Minister down to the old gentleman who lives down the street, has our favourites. Even people like Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson.

One that comes to mind easily is Sausages and Mashed Potatoes, or as it is more commonly or popularly known, "Bangers and Mash". I see where it has become the all out favourite in Britain particularly during the economic down-turn.

And whatever you may think, (and I can hear some of you say, yuk when you look at the photos), it is a delicious and filling meal. That is, if it is cooked properly and if it is presented properly. And made from top quality ingredients. Why even my dear old Mum was able to throw a couple of snags (sausages) on the plate with a dollop of mashed potato, and we kids would be straining at the bit to get stuck into "dinner".

I can't think of when I've been so disappointed at a serving of "comfort food. Until I recently had a spot of lunch at Stallions, that is. There it was on the menu (for kids alas, but I've heard that anyone can ask for whatever's on the menu as an adult serving and expect to be served), so I figured, yes, it's bangers and mash for me today. Even if it's just a teeny tiny serve! The wait-person checked and confirmed that I could be served with an adult size, and I sat back in eager anticipation. I knew I'd have to pay, but it was going to be worth it. Wasn't it?

Well it fronted up, and if I'd served this to my kids, they would have thrown the plate and its contents at me. The above photos tell a story and even though the four have come from the internet (with full acknowledgement to the owners of the photo copyrights) they also tell it how it is when it comes to serving up simple tucker like bangers and mash. Or how it should be.

But take a good look at this photo - this is a photograph of the ACTUAL meal I was served. And before I go any further, please take note that this was an "ADULT" serving!

You'll see what I mean by "you don't always get what you expect" even though you pay for it. This meal cost me $15 - so what? While McDonalds or KFC are known to have "affordable meals", there are many local places where you can buy a good meal (even 2 course, either soup and mains or mains and sweets) for just $13 in nice surroundings, accompanied by table linen, and a house wine (on the house). Why didn't I go to one of those? Simply because it's nice to try out something new. But again back to the photo. You can even see the "grease"or "fat" that the sausages had been cooked in, smeared across the plate (to the right). This serving and plate presentation, did not endear me to the restaurant at all. Especially when I asked for a glass of cool water, and was told I'd have to buy a bottle. I didn't want a bottle (a plastic bottle at that), I wanted a simple glass of cool water. I didn't get one!

Needless to say I didn't have any lunch at this restaurant - I returned the Sausages and Mash with the comment that I certainly wouldn't recommend Stallions to any of my friends. All I got was a snort of disapproval from the chef.

And what's this got to do with being a blog on a plus size site? Everything. Because all of us are consumers. All of us keep these businesses in business. All of us have to eat. It matters not that we are size zero or size 20 or 30. And sometimes we need a bit of "comfort food". But not greasy food (even the mash was sitting in grease!) thrown on a plate and served up as though it were part of King Henry VIII's banquet! (If he'd been there, there'd would have been shouts of "off with their heads"!!!!)

We think we'll regularly re-visit the subject of food and "comfort food" a bit more often within this blog. There's nothing quite as good as a bit of constructive criticism!

Growing old and deserving to be treated with respect

It's difficult at times to convince yourself that what is happening around you, is actually for the best. You might get slapped down and trodden on, by people who you think really care about you, and you tend to blame yourself.

And sometimes the blame is deserved, but quite often not. It seems to me that there is a growing lack of courtesy and respect shown towards older people these days. Is it my imagination? Has it always been so?

I don't think so. And I base this statement on what I have seen happen around me, not only within my own family, and extended family, but many others, over the years. In our family parents and grandparents all shared in the dignity of being considered important and worthy of respect, in both thought as well as speech by all members of the family, and even more especially by neighbours and the society in which they moved.

Today people up to and around 40 and 50 years of age, tend to "look down" on older folk, as though within their wrinkles and greying hair and slower painful steps, they've managed to lose all their intelligence! They also take the attitude that older people don't have "feelings" anymore and can't be hurt or offended by inappropriate attitudes or behaviour. Sometimes their exasperation is extreme.

In different cultures around the world, older members within families and society were, and in many cases still are, seen to be the "wise ones". They are sought out to advise, and to give encouragement, to the younger members of family, based on their experience and knowledge of the world. Even if that knowledge only revolves around their home-life, and nearby neighborhood or community.

Sadly there are a lot of people today who are never thought about by their families. They are left, isolated, and forgotten. Others are more fortunate enough in having the security of a home and financial backing. Today one seldom sees or hears of older parents or relations living within the warmth of the family circle.

The speed and extent of the building of "retirement villages" has even surprised the developers/investors. Many loving and gracious elderly parents (even both sets of parents - that is parents and parents-in-law) who remain mobile and independent (i.e. not expecting to take precedence over other family members, are content to be part of the family when it is convenient for all to mingle and get together. It keeps them young!

Yes, "retirement villages" are a viable and sensible option for thousands of "retirees" - if they prefer to be totally independent, and can afford to be, that is. So many men and women find themselves at the time their lives when they should be enjoying themselves, no fault of their own, to be almost penniless. Not every one can call upon the proceeds of "Superannuation" to provide financial security in purchasing a home unit within a "village" and being able to carry-on in a life-style that they have chosen or prefer.

Yet as people in the western world have become more affluent during past decades, the threat of a "recession" brings with it all sorts of stresses about where to live and how to afford to live, even very simply. And this applies more specifically to those who, as said earlier, have no financial security upon which to draw upon.

And this brings me back to what I said at first. being ignored, slapped down and trodden on. Because I don't like seeing older people treated with a total disregard for their feelings. I don't like seeing them ridiculed, and bullied, and spoken to as though they are naughty children. They deserve the right to be able to stand with head held high, and to be given the respect that their age and wisdom and experience demands.

And because this is a long "post", I can't but help add my observations of many younger women (in their teens and 20s etc) who display the old-fashioned courtesies and respect that older people so earnestly desire. Is it perhaps that those in their 40s and 50s are so busy with life that they can't or don't want to spend time with their elders and that the younger people have seen the void and actually taken steps to fill that void? I'd like to think so.

Pretty Petties!

I recently spoke with a young woman who had done one of those Buy From Op Shops Bus Trip. Most ladies who go on these bus trips look for "current fashion" bargains.

So I was surprised with Bec mentioned that she had only looked for, and bought, vintage clothing. And one particular item of clothing at that.

Are there any readers who recall the full skirted dresses that had petticoats as part of the garment; as well as those lovely white lawn full skirted petticoats that were full of interesting embellishments. Lace inserts; mock quilting; threaded ribbon around the hem and down the skirt itself; even embroidery in tones of white as well as full colour embroidery in Coates silk threads?

Well Bec had a VERY successful day she told me - she'd found not one, not two, but eight different petticoats, and she was ecstatic (as one would be!). These petticoats are not for wearing under her vintage 1950s dresses - oh, no, they're to be worn as skirts in their own right. Those that are plain Bec intends embroidering and adding lace panels and highlights.

It just goes to show that looking at garments from a different perspective, opens new and exciting ways of dressing. Bec has a couple of those teasing waist cinchers - tight elastic with a buckle, and because she is curvy, with a defined waist, she's going to wow everyone who sees her wearing her petticoat collection.

16 Plus Market Day at Seaford

Further to my earlier email, I attended - well actually shared a stall, at a Size 16 plus Market yesterday, held at the Seaford Life Saving Club Rooms by Janine Mison of Real Women Australia Pty Ltd.

The weather which started out with grey skies took a bad turn into lashing rain and then hail but that certainly didn't dampen the spirits of the ladies who had taken up stalls to display their garments and accessories. The temperatures were low, but the attitude of everyone who attended was high.

This was an occasion where literally thousands of garments (many of them new with their original swing tags) were presented in the always hard to find range of size 16 plus. Many garments were in the higher range from 24 through to 30, and buyers took advantage of the many specials.

Most of the garments were priced within the $5, $10, $20 range, with some spectacular garments a little higher in price. There was even an exquisite Deb frock on sale.

Casual garments, dress-up outfits, leather coats, beautiful lingerie, shoes, boots, handbags, hats and costume jewellery were all featured.

It is hoped that this will become regular event, held around Melbourne in different areas, especially during the warmer months. I would recommend that when you see one of these special days advertised, that you take the opportunity of adding to your wardrobe for a very reasonable cost, and to have a great time choosing special garments. You'll meet some fantastic women as well.

Even consider booking a stall yourself to sell some of your pre-loved clothing - and to make room for more purchases! Who needs an excuse to buy something beautiful?

Full Figured Fashion Shows

A highly publicised fashion event such as the Full Figured Fashion Week held in the US shows how professional such an event can be. And should be.

I've attended a number of similar "Plus-Size" Fashion events over the years both here in the Eastern States as well as in Perth Western Australia, and in my humble opinion the women who organise these events in Victoria particularly need to study, before throwing these events, the focus audience situation a lot more deeply than they apparently do and to expand their thoughts into incorporating as many clothing suppliers as possible.

Fun, jokes and laughter have to be a part of the evening (or afternoon) events; but there has to be a balance between humorous and series. I say this respectfully because those few that I've attended in the Eastern States have been spoiled by the fact that the women in charge, including the models, seem intent of making fun of themselves and the garments they wear, rather than taking pride in the fact that they are curvaceous women wearing beautiful, flattering garments. What I found was that they denigrated themselves rather than promoted the fact that they are beautiful, sensual women.

I'm not taking sides (ie. Eastern States versus West) but the Perth Breakfasts and Dinners that combined with plus-size fashion shows, were done professionally and their audiences and guests always included people like you and me, as well as buyers from the major retail stores, representatives from leading labels, as well as a sprinkling of business and professional women from that City. Bridal salons, boutiques and smaller specialised clothing stores all took a part in these events, by taking up the opportunity of displaying some of their garments in a room set aside for that purpose. This meant that everyone has the opportunity of seeing what was available in Perth through its stores and boutiques, and might I add, a number of top-flight dressmakers also displayed some of their special garments. Orders were placed for items of interest, and appointments made to visit salons or dressmakers rooms to discuss possible garments.

An interesting point about the Perth shows also was that many Eastern States labels were highlighted at the Perth events; the companies obviously saw the advantage of displaying their clothes over in the West.

Travelling in comfort for the plus-size!

About this time last year I made a quick visit to Sydney. A surprise visit to share in my brother's birthday celebrations! I had a wonderful time, even though I only spent two days in Sydney. While I had left Melbourne having grey skies and rain, I arrived in Sydney to find even more grey skies, rain and bitterly cold. But that certainly didn't dampen my spirits!

But I thought you'd like to know something about air travel today. In the past even travelling by the more expensive airline Qantas I've had to request a seat belt extender. In fact a number of longer trips I've done to the West I was most uncomfortable with Qantas - it was almost as though the seating had shrunk from the previous time I'd flown with them!

But on other occasions I travelled with Virgin Blue and found the seating comfortable and the seat belts were sufficiently long enough to enfold my ample curves!

The same this time. I did request a seat belt extender as I entered the plane, but I found to my delight that when seated, the seat belt once again fitted! I was ecstatic!

I'm a great observer of people and situations, as you probably are aware by now, and I saw many business men of ample size and sort-of-ample sizes who fitted in comfortably to the Virgin Blue seats. Suffice to say I've heard from many other businessmen that they have had a few difficulties when travelling with Qantas over time too.

Is it that Virgin Blue have realised their seating is required for slightly wider, taller and heavier passengers these days? Whatever the answer, I have to say the trip to Sydney and back was great! (Even taking into account the fact we flew through storms both ways).

What do you think about the design and variety of clothes for the plus size woman?

I'm particularly interested in the perspective from an Australian point of view. Each season my hopes build up that we're going to see some really good styles, good colours and good fabrics. And each year, I have to admit I experience a little disappointment. Not that everything on sale is bad, but the majority I have to say lacks imagination.

Even some of the better labels seem to be undergoing a shrinkage phase. By that I mean shirts and tops are no longer tunic length or knee length or even mid-thigh length. They're back up around the waist or four inches lower. Now these may look good in photos, especially when they're modelled by women who have a nice figure (and let's face it, many plus size women do have nice figures and even dare I say it, flat tummies). But for the rest of us, there comes a time when a "saddle" appears. It sits nicely between the waist and the thighs and it can range from being a "bit" to a darn LOT.

This means that the shirts and tops might sit nicely around the bustline and even the waist, but .............. The lower your eyes take in the reflection of the garment in a long mirror, it's obvious to all and sundry that this saddle is protruding under and beyond the shape of the top or shirt. How many plus size women look at the profile or side view in the dressing room mirrors at stores these days? How many plus size women look at the rear view reflection in the dressing room mirrors these days? And how many women have a full length mirror in their home these days? Come on, be honest. A lot of women we know NEVER look at the side or rear view.

Not doing so has a couple of consequences. They don't see themselves as others see them. And they do a dis-service to themselves by not being aware of how the garment looks. Because I think it's about time we showed the courage of our convictions and made stores and retailers aware that we're NOT happy with garments that they sell, and which are NOT made according to most of our needs.

As a postscript to this post, I'd also like to add my comment relative to the fabric we see everywhere today. There's something called "mesh" which is being sold through the small discount outlets in shopping malls, and this fabric is also seen in the much more expensive lines being sold through the major retailers. It's used as tops, and as a top layer in skirts and pants. It may well be a practical fabric, but it certainly is not an attractive fabric. It looks what it is - a second class stretchy fabric that pretends to be a good quality material. It really isn't. It stretches - sure. But it also goes out of shape. It also tears easily, and a number of women associated with our newsletters have complained that inadvertently they've managed to tear holes in this mesh fabric even by putting the garment on. I don't know where this fabric is "made" but it sure doesn't appear to be made locally. For a country known around the world as the grower and supplier of beautiful cottons, linens and fine wools, we're subjected to some mighty awful fabrics here.

I'd like to hear what ladies in other countries think.

Those dratted scales!

No I'm not talking about music scales,

but the dratted weighing machines

If you're anything like me, you've probably thrown out your bathroom scales years ago - they're certainly not our friends and will take great delight in belittling us and our "feelings".

But I'm talking about when you do to the Doctors, or even more importantly, if you have need to go to hospital for any reason. That might be from getting an eyelash taken from the corner of your eye, to major surgery. They will at some time during the admission process, weigh you.

Now, don't get me wrong. I realise they need to know your weight, if only for the reason of how much anaesthetic to give you, should you need surgery. But I don't like the way many nurses seem to find enjoyment in loudly repeating your weight as they take notes. It's not as though everyone in the hospital is deaf, surely.

I'm sure you can tell many stories about inconsiderate hospital staff. I've had nurses very quietly look at the scales and make a note, and I've had strident nurses bellow once if not twice my weight as they write it down. Do I sense a fiendish satisfaction in their faces as they do their best to embarrass me?

I've been caught up with the obnoxious BMI debate and I'll not go into that at the moment, but the way in which plus size women are treated by a lot of hospital and clinic staff is no longer tolerable, in my opinion. It's time for us to stand up for who and what we believe in - ourselves, and actually say what we think - without being militant or nasty, that is.

So I've composed a short letter - constructive criticism I call it - that I attach to my medical details whenever I have to change clinics, or attend hospitals for checkups and so forth. I set out the fact that I am an adult woman, larger than some and smaller than others, and that my weight is very personal. I point out that I have learned to live with my weight, and that should it be necessary for staff to check/recheck my weight, then could they please give me the courtesy of doing it quietly. That would prevent me becoming embarrassed, not by my weight but by their rudeness, and it would allow them to do their job competently and efficiently. They'd have the numbers or figures they need, and there'd be two happy people. Me and them (the nurse and the hospital).

Updating some of your favourite garments

Further to our blog on getting your favourite clothes "altered" to fit your ever changing body shapes, here are a few tips.

1. Find someone who has expert knowledge and is competent in all aspects of sewing, not just hems and simple quick fix solutions.

2. Find clothes from within your own wardrobe that can be brought up to date by changing the hem length, taking the garment in or re-shaping the shoulders. Subtle alterations can make clothes look more "fashionable".

3. Don't personally do complicated alterations unless you're confident in your skills. However even if you try and can't finish the work, hand it over to a professional.

4. Before you alter new cotton clothing or a pair of jeans, wash or dry-clean them first according to the label to allow for shrinkage.

5. When you hem, pin both legs as one leg can be shorter than the other. Get someone else to pin your clothes.

6. Look into getting something tailor made for your size and shape. It may not be as expensive as you think.

For those of us who ARE plus-size, the advice in point 6 is really wise. Too often we spend time and energy in searching for something that we have a good idea on what we really want, only to take on second best. And even then it may need alterations.

Therefore if you have nice fabric and even a pattern (not necessarily in your size), take it along and have a chat with someone who you've seen or heard recommended as a dressmaker or "alteration" expert. Talk to them about what you'd like as far as a tailored garment to suit YOUR body and shape.

We know it sometimes takes a while to find someone who "understands" the more curvaceous figure, but a really good dressmaker is worth more than her weight in gold.

Fashion Makeover

Do you have clothing in your wardrobe that you've grown out of? Or perhaps find some of them to be too big?

There's no doubt our bodies change shape over the years, and while we may not actually "lose" weight, often we will notice that our clothes don't quite fit the way they used to, or should do. Following pregnancy and the birth of a baby quite a few clothes need to be altered too, and this can help the budget especially when the garments are favourites.

While it's expensive to have your own personal dressmaker, a lot of women have taken up the challenge and now offer "alteration services". These range from sewing hems on jeans, pants, skirts as well as putting new elastic around the waistlines. However, a lot of these people actually do dressmaking and have found a valuable market in providing their services to the every-day woman who wants to upgrade her wardrobe without having to buy new clothes.

As a very proficient, qualified dressmaker said recently, "knowing someone's body and shape is the key to doing good alterations work". A good alteration expert can tell if the shoulder is dropped and the hip is high and remake garments taking into account all the important aspects of a good fitting garment.

Suggestions may range from changing a hemline by not merely following the fashion, but looking at the vertical line of their height and to judge according to the hemline, and that good tailoring makes it more fashionable. Adding darts can make all the difference from a dowdy looking garment to a smart, stylish fitted garment - even if you are plus size!

Above all, tailoring to YOUR body can better the look of the garment, making it appear superior in quality and cut.

Growing older - does it mean falling off the perch?

There are days when getting up out of bed is a breeze! You throw off the bed covers, and spritely stand up, ready to face the day. You quickly shower (it doesn't take as much time when you feel bright like this than other days when everything is grey!); you get dressed, do your hair and apply your makeup, and begin the day's activities. You're filled with the joy of standing upright, not being reminded of the arthritic aches and pains. You're alert and eager to be and do things. You may have planned the entire day or else of a mind to allow everything to just happen spontaneously.

Then there are those grey days I spoke about. It's not only the skies that are grey, but the feeling that you're not really inclined to stagger out of bed. You're not too keen to bother with the shower at such an early hour; choosing what you're going to wear is a bit of a hassle (why not just toss on what you wore yesterday?). As for doing your hair and putting on some makeup - well, why bother?

We all experience these types of days. For some of us, it's easier to complain about the "grey days" and accept the good days without a thought as to our own personal attitudes.

Because if doesn't matter if you're growing older, or only a teenager, there are always going to be "grey" days and good days. It's all a matter of fact. It's what we do with the variances that is important.

I know a person or two who complain about everything. Honestly. They complain about the fact that the kettle doesn't boil water the same from one day to the next (how they figure this out I really don't know!). They complain about the television programmes not being to their liking (they're too darned lazy to turn the TV off!); they complain about their neighbours ("their kids make so much noise" - well! let's face it, the world would be worse off if the children never said anything or giggled or laughed or sang or played); the bread doesn't taste the same as it used to; they don't like Mrs so and so who lives over the road; they whinge about the grass growing in the backyard; the traffic congestion morning and night puta them in a bad mood that lasts the entire day; they need a hair trim but can't fit it in with all their other busy-ness; the teenagers are hassling them about this, that and the other; and the dog needs a bath. In other words they're very unhappy, and sadly embittered people.

Then there are those people who start the day off singing. I'd like to be seen and known as one of these people. Because even though it might not have any influence on those around us, it most certainly influences how well I see myself and my world. And there's no reason to suspect that falling off a perch is something a growing older person HAS to worry about! Hanging on to that perch is not only adventurous and brave, it's downright exciting.

Nothing to wear to the office?

Well, many of us have said this over the years. And quite honestly it was difficult to find clothing that spoke of "professional woman" - up until recently that is. No matter what we chose to wear, there were always comments that we dressed too frilly or feminine or else tried to emulate the male attire. For the professional woman of the early 21st Century though, there are garments aplenty. And these garments make a definite statement. More importantly, today's woman KNOWS what she likes, and she follows her instincts that she's learned will always tell her the right thing, especially when it comes to personal style.

Fat Jibes!

I read with interest an article dealing with "fat jibes", by authors Rebecca Puhl and Kelly Brownell, both from Yale.

It seems research has found that making people feel bad about their size and/or weight is not the way to go. It's counter-productive. There is a wide-spread belief that making people feel bad about themselves (i.e. attaching your fat photograph on the frig) is an acceptable and effective form of motivation. It isn't.

Victimisation (for that's what it is) amongst youngsters creates a no-win situation for them. This type of stigma doesn't work, and most of us know some of the consequences of being treated this way.

I bet most of us can confirm derogatory comments whether in the family, amongst our (so-called) friends and at work. Think of job discrimination. Do we get the promotion without having to undergo rigorous processes when many younger and slimmer people get into the short-list quickly and easily and it's NOT always that they're better at the job. Oh no! Even physical aggression. now, this is one of those "hidden" things that go on, but most of us again, will confirm that we've been subjected to this sort of treatment. We know all this because most of us have gone through this sort of unreasonable behaviour by others.

But the article quoted: "the personal stories we've collected in our studies are heartbreaking; a mother joking in a crowded room that she takes her child to a tentmaker to buy back-to-school clothes; a doctor telling a patient that she is too fat to interest her husband sexually; a teacher announcing to a classroom that an absent child 'probably stayed home to eat'".

These stories reflect a viciousness long ago shunned in matters of race or gender. Here, though, is a perverse twist. People inflicting the stigma are often convinced they are actually helping the victim.

The authors say, "We all need to change and the first step is simple. We must recognise that weight stigma is harmful, that it may well be contributing to obesity, and that it is not legitimate."

Health care professionals including doctors and nurses, dietitians and nutritionists and others within the health arena are very often the perpetrators of this stigma.

What I found of particular interest in this article was the statement, If even the health care system is unwelcoming, where can the obese turn for help?"

Where? Well a lot of us find help and encouragement (in verbal terms) from other people who are in the same predicament as us. It's by joining forces that we can find companionship and understanding.

Finding your own style!

It's not difficult to establish your own style, if you put your mind to it.

Often it's easier to just buy "anything" that might fit, wear it and then become dissatisfied as to how you "feel" when wearing that garment. It's doesn't take too much to realise that we often buy something that isn't the right design; isn't the right colour; and the fabric doesn't do justice to our shape.

Yet, we often make the same mistake over and over.

There are many books on the subject of "style" and how to choose what to wear to suit our own personalities. Of course these days there are thousands of blogs about the same subject, but it's nice to work out our own "style", based on what we like and how we can manipulate what we like into what we look and feel good in wearing.

It's setting our sights on trusting our own instincts, following those instincts and building up our confidence in knowing exactly what our personal style is, and can be.

The numbers of good suppliers of clothing for the curvaceous woman are increasing. Yes, there are more and more in the marketplace each month. And this is good - for them, and for us.

Something Old, Something New!

It's funny how fashion sometimes goes full circle. And in doing so, it seldom occurs to us that maybe fashion of today is based (sometimes directly and sometimes loosely) on what we had as "fashion" decades ago.

For women of size, I always like to encourage them to think "positively", not only about how they live their lives but also their attitude towards themselves and how they look in the here and now (not waiting until they lose 20 lb!).

I met a young lass the other day who recently appeared on national television as a "collector". A collector of aprons. All sorts of designs, styles, and all sorts of fabrics. From hessian (heavily embroidered) to soft floating chiffon and muslin. There are florals, pastels, vivid stripes, spots, multi-coloureds, single colours; embellished (with sequins, beading, laces etc). Some with frills, some plain, even one of two Victorian styled aprons that covered our Great Grandma's ample bosums and came almost to ankle length (to protect the ankle length dresses she wore).

Then a couple of days ago one of my friends who is a member of a plus-size group, mentioned that she had asked about aprons during some of their discussions.

That got me thinking. Just why is it that we don't bring back "Aprons" as part of our life-style? It's not so old-fashioned when you think about it! Especially for the woman who wants to retain her femininity in today's' household - particularly the kitchen. They're not only "pretty", but they're practical! And who doesn't need something pretty occasionally to make us feel happy?

I meet a lot of women who strive for "equality" in today's workplace - they insist that they want to be treated equal in all things both in their career and in their home. Yet it surprises them at times when talking over how they lead their lives, to learn from other women that they enjoy their femininity within their life-styles, just as much as their "equality".
